The Gawler Little Athletics Club launched their 2024/25 season this morning (Sunday 27th October) with a record number of athletes.

The club which has been operating for over 40 years has over 160 athletes registered for the 2024/25 season which was officially launched at the Trinity College by local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo and Deputy Mayor Cody Davies.

The club caters for athletes as young as three and as old as seventeen years.

Mr Piccolo said it was great to see a huge number of young people involved in the club and the benefits they accrue, go beyond better health and wellbeing.

“Being involved in a sport helps young people develop a range of skills and live values that help them in other parts of their lives,” said Mr Piccolo.

“Young people learn about commitment, persistence, resilience and how practice improves performance.”

Mr Piccolo also acknowledged the important role that volunteers play in providing young people in our community with the opportunity to be involved in sporting and recreational activities.

“Parents, grandparents and friends help in a number of ways to make sure that our young people can be the best they can.” said Mr Piccolo.

“Earlier this year the club was successful in obtaining a $3,000 grant from the State Government through the Office of Sport and Recreation to upgrade their equipment.

Club President and Coach, Mr Mike Glanville said that the club offers opportunities for young people of all ages to participate in a range of events and activities, including state championships.

“From the 2023/24 season, the club now offers those who are eighteen years and older, but still young at heart, the opportunity to participate in athletics as a recreation, which enables them to be involved in club events, but just not in state competitions,” said Mr Glanville.

“Three- and four-year-old athletes enjoy the fun of running, jumping and throwing through games and activities in the tiny tot program.”

“The Club is all about the family, fun and fitness,” and all are welcome to participate irrespective of their ability.”
