Gawler and District College and Mark Oliphant College students who aspire to be future leaders put up their hands to take part in Member for Light, Tony Piccolo MP’s leadership events in Parliament House.
More than 30 students across various year levels were toured through parliament and heard from guest speakers giving insight into politics and the attributes of leadership.
Lawyer Natasha Jones presented on how to approach and solve complex, multifaceted issues when there is no clear solution, while Democracy Co’s Emma Fletcher and Kerry Reed discussed democracy and its impact on a society.
Mr Piccolo said problem solving was an important part of a leader’s role, so if young leaders can master the art of solving “wicked problems”, they can make a huge impact on public policy.
“A focus of the training day is to help the student leaders understand our political institutions and processes to enable them to take action that makes a difference,” said Mr Piccolo.
“From time to time I get asked by some young people what do they need to do to become a member of parliament, and I discuss with them the various options open to them.”
“More importantly, I also discuss with them other ways they can influence government policy without necessarily becoming a member of parliament.”
Mr Piccolo said he was pleased with the positive feedback received from the students involved.
“Their enthusiasm and depth of knowledge for politics and leadership is inspiring, providing a high-level of engagement and generating many constructive ideas,” said Mr Piccolo.
“Their questions and opinions reflected a deep understanding of the topics, and fresh perspectives will help continue driving positive change in our community.”
Following the success of this trial leadership program, Mr Piccolo is now inviting schools across the Light electorate and beyond to nominate up to four students to take part in another scheduled to be held on Wednesday, 14th August.
“This program is designed to build up and complement what the student leaders are learning at their school, while also hearing from experts in leadership roles about their experiences and knowledge,” Mr Piccolo said.
