Former student Ekaterina Sivinskaia was given a hero’s welcome at the Gawler & District College today as her 2023 Dux of the Year achievement was officially celebrated.

Ms Sivinskaia achieved the school’s highest ATAR of 96.4 and is now studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science at the University of Adelaide in her journey to “help people all over the world” as a clinical psychologist.

Member for Light, Tony Piccolo MP, and Mayor Karen Redman were both invited onstage during the assembly to congratulate Ms Sivinskaia for her wonderful achievement before inspiring all students to find something they’re passionate about in life.

“Success can take a lot of appearances, but the most important part is trying your hardest to achieve,” Mr Piccolo said.

“I never achieved the Dux Award, but it hasn’t held me back from achieving other things in life – I’ve just tried my hardest, and if you do the same, it’ll give you the best opportunities and choices later in life.

“My passion is my community, so find your love in life – it doesn’t matter what it is – and try hard and you do actually achieve.”

Ms Sivinskaia reminisced about her years and admitted that while it was “strange” being back at school six months after graduating, she has “truly missed this place (the school) a lot…going to classes every day and hanging out with all my friends.”

“I started my journey here at GDC in 2018 as a scared girl in Year 8 who was afraid of all the big kids around her, only to finish my journey in 2023 as one of those big kids, with the brightest memories and ‘bestest’ of friends,” Ms Sivinskaia said.

The alumna also offered advice to the future graduates – “keep your school and your personal lives balanced.”

“Don’t let schoolwork consume you, but also don’t forget to do your work and study rather than play video games - trust me, I’ve been there,” Ms Sivinskaia said.

“Also make sure to always ask for lots of help, so you understand everything being taught; I promise, your teachers want all the best for you.

“I wish the class of 2024 and to every student here today, all the very best and urge you all to face your current and future challenges head on, be proud of yourselves and your achievements, have no regrets you can achieve all your dreams and goals.”

Ms Sivinskaia thanked her family, friends, Year 12 teaches and all staff members who enabled her to “perform to the highest level.”
