While the spotlight has been on the Year 12 graduates as they step into an exciting new chapter of life, Year 6’s across our region are now on an exciting journey into secondary schooling.
The 2024 Year 6 Graduating Class at Gawler and District College celebrated their achievements into the night with students, parents, families and friends on Thursday, 12 December.
Member for Light and alumni, Tony Piccolo MP, was a special guest of the night and said while the transition for students can be daunting, the schooling community in the room was proof that support is always there to guide them.
“The shift to high school is a shock at first with new environments, more independence and a broader choice of studies, but it’s also a chance for personal growth as you start to better understand yourself as a person,” Mr Piccolo said.
“You should always be sensible in your choices in life, but don’t be afraid to try new things and be open to every opportunity that comes your way – you won’t know what you like until you try it.
“Never forget the friends, family and staff who have helped you along the way and remember that they’re always there to support you in times of need, or even as a sounding board to ask questions.”
Mr Piccolo presented two special awards, including The Gerri Walker Award and an award he sponsors – The Resilience Award.
“School leader Brejah Okeil is an epitome of the Gerri Walker Award – demonstrating the school values of Respect, Generosity, and Excellence to a very high standard,” Mr Piccolo said.
“The Resilience Award is particularly meaningful to me because it highlights the strength and determination these students have shown.
“Congratulations to all the award winners throughout the night and Bella-Rose White, our 2024 Resilience Award winner, who has faced adversity with admirable strength and courage."
Okeil was joined by fellow Year 6 Leader Zoe Way as emcees for the evening, while Principal Angie Michael addressed the graduates, emphasising the importance of kindness, curiosity, and resilience.
"Today is about celebrating you—your achievements, your growth, and the bright futures ahead of you," Principal Michael said.
“As you move into high school, remember that you are the authors of your own story…the foundation you've built here will serve you well."
Graduating students Chrysler Elliot and Jett Edwards spoke on behalf of the Year 6 students.
"Your guidance, care, and unwavering support have brought us to this significant night – we hope we’ve been able to make you proud," they said, expressing gratitude to their families, friends and school staff.
The ceremony concluded with a final video showcasing cherished memories from the students' time in the Junior School, leaving everyone with a sense of nostalgia and excitement for the future as they later gathered for dinner and photos at the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club.
