In a significant advancement for inclusivity across South Australia, the Malinauskas Labor Government has introduced the State’s first Autism Strategy.
The historic commitment to those of all ages with autism and their families, the SA Autism Strategy 2024–2029 focuses on the importance of early and accurate diagnosis, supportive educational environments, meaningful employment and accessible services.
An emphasis is also placed on fostering community participation, providing comprehensive health care and ensuring fair treatment within the justice system.
State Member for Light, Tony Piccolo MP, is proud the Labor Government has introduced a new era of understanding and support, reshaping the future of autism in our state.
“It reflects our collective resolve to create a society that embraces diversity and offers equal opportunities for all,” Mr Piccolo said.
The strategy is complemented by the first Autism Inclusion Charter launched 2 April 2024 - World Autism Day.
The Charter outlines the principles of knowledge and understanding, wellbeing, connection and belonging, and employment and opportunity as drivers to improve outcomes for autistic people.
“By implementing this strategy, we are recognising the unique strengths of the Autistic community and ensuring they, and their families and those involved in their lives, have the support they need to thrive.”
The strategy was developed through extensive consultation with autistic people and autism communities, ensuring that their voices and experiences were integral to its creation.
Several initiatives are already in place to support the goals of this strategy, including establishing an Office for Autism. introducing two Autism Assessment and Diagnostic Services to improve autism diagnosis and introducing Autism Inclusion Teachers to government primary schools.
The Department of Human Services will now continue to collaborate, consult and engage with the Autistic and autism communities, and wider South Australian community, to develop and implement action plans aligning with the Strategy.
