The increasing contribution made by the growing Filipino community in the Light Electorate has been recognised in State Parliament.
Local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo, this week spoke about the history of Filipino migration to Australia and how they contribute to our successful multicultural society.
Mr Piccolo said, “Their participation in community events, their celebration of Filipino festivals, and their involvement in local initiatives all serve to strengthen the bonds between our cultures.”
“Even within my own church, St Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the growth of Filipino attendance has been tremendous. They’ve quickly become a major part of our Christian community with their support and contributions through all activities,” said Mr Piccolo.
“Not only do they enrich our community through their culture, but also the important skills they bring with them.
“From doctors and nurses, from pharmacists to engineers, and those working in the caring industries, they are helping our community fill the skills gap, and we all benefit from their contribution”.
With Philippines Independence Day being celebrated earlier this month on the 12th of June and Philippines Republic Day coming up on the 4th of July, Mr Piccolo said, “I thought it fitting we honour the Filipino community who now call my electorate home.”
The tale of the Filipino community’s story here began in the 1860s with the arrival of the 'Manilamen’ – pearl divers from the Visayas and Mindanao regions, who journeyed to our shores in search of new opportunities.
A majority of the ‘manilamen’ were Catholic and made strong connections with Catholic missionaries in Broome and Thursday Island.
Many married into the indigenous population and settled in the remote parts of Northern and Western Australia.
From a small group of 50 people in 1975 to a thriving community of over 15,000 today across Australia, their journey mirrors the dynamic evolution of the Philippines itself.
“This growth reflects the community's adaptability, hard work and the desire to build a better future for themselves and their families,” said Mr Piccolo.
The Filipino community’s story is a shining example of how embracing multiculturalism has contributed to our nation’s prosperity and social cohesion.
