The Gawler River community have a new CFS Station which will help volunteer firefighters to better prepare for the summer fire season.

The new station was officially opened by Emergency Services Minister Peter Malinauskas on Saturday.

The State Government has invested $685,000 in the new station which includes offices, a communications centre and a tanker storage facility. The new facilities will also enhance training opportunities for members.

Mr Malinauskas said the Gawler River Brigade provides a vital service to the community.

“The new station is an example of the funds raised by the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) directly benefiting community safety through the provision of new facilities,” said Mr Malinauskas.

“More than 30 volunteers operate from the station, and the upgrade ensures the brigade can maintain the high standard of service delivery provided by CFS personnel across the state.”

Mr Malinauskas paid tribute to the work of volunteers for their service not only to their local communities but across the state. Light Group Officer, Mr Philip Earl said it gave him great pleasure to be at the opening as the journey has taken awhile with correspondence regarding a new station for Gawler River dating back to 2009.

“Many meetings have taken place over the years regarding a suitable site on this block,” said Mr Earl.

Different plans for sheds and other buildings have all been considered over the years involving consultation with local groups, council, the CFS, State Politicians and numerous Ministers.” Mr Earl acknowledged the contribution that local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo made to building of the new station.

“This was not getting us far and for the first time several years ago local member Mr Tony Piccolo got all parties around the same table and a plan finally started coming together,” said Mr Earl.

Mr Earl thanked the brigade for their patience as the final outcome has been something to be proud of for all that were involved. Mr Earl’s sentiment were echoed by Mr Piccolo who said the process had taken too long and the volunteers deserved better.

Mr Piccolo said the new station will provide the volunteers with facilities and amenities that are more appropriate and provide a work environment which will enhance their training opportunities and their ability to recruit new members.

“As local Member, I am always keen to lobby for greater support for all volunteers in my community,” said Mr Piccolo.
