Residents in Munno Para West have joined forces with their local Member of Parliament, Mr Tony Piccolo to reclaim their streets from speeding drivers.

Mr Piccolo said that he has been doorknocking in the area over the past month and that traffic issues have evolved as a major concern for local residents.

“Residents like living in the area but have expressed concerns about the number of drivers who speed down residential streets,” Mr Piccolo said.

“It appears that Peerless, Chellaston and Brandis Roads are the worst affected,” he said.

Residents are calling on the City of Playford to take action to put in place measures, which will calm traffic down on these roads.

In a recent letter to the City of Playford, Mr Piccolo wrote that speeding traffic in local streets and congestion on Curtis Road, were two issues having an adverse impact on local residents.

“While I will raise the matter with SAPOL, residents indicate that speeding does not take place at any narrowly defined time, which makes enforcement (by police) difficult,” he wrote.

Mr Piccolo has requested the Council take action, which would help create a lower speed environment, by adopting some or all of the following actions:

- Signage to remind people of the legal speed limits

- Physical traffic calming measures

- Speed limit information on wheelie rubbish bins (as successfully undertaken by the Gawler Road Safety Committee.)

Mr Piccolo said residents stressed that the problem was not isolated to the occasional speedster, but was a regular daily occurrence.

“The Council may also wish to establish a Local Area Traffic Management Committee, as a vehicle to engage with the community to achieve a mutually acceptable outcome,” Mr Piccolo said. “The residents are sending a S.O.S [save our streets] plea to the council.

“I will continue to work with residents and the local council to make Munno Para West streets safer for all,” he said.
