The invaluable work of historical and heritage societies across our community have been honoured in State Parliament.

Member of Parliament Tony Piccolo MP met with various history groups recently, including Andrea Brow and Pat Thompson from the Dublin History Group, Gerald Lally from the Clare Regional History Group and Wendy and David Spackman from the Mt Horrocks Historical Society.

After hearing the work in their respective communities, Mr Piccolo emphasised the crucial role these organisations play in preserving and educating us about our social and cultural history.

“Their countless hours recording, preserving, publishing, educating and informing our communities about our history cannot be overstated,” said Mr Piccolo.

“The work of these historical and heritage groups involves meticulous collection, storage, and preservation of information books and artefacts.

“The dedication and passion of these groups are what keep our history alive as they ensure that our communities remain connected to their past, enabling us to fully understand our present.

"Without these groups, we risk losing our connection to our history.”

Mr Piccolo described himself as a “lover of history both from local to world”, and suggested “it is important that we acknowledge and support the work of our local historical and heritage societies.”

“These organisations provide a valuable service that often goes unrecognised,” said Mr Piccolo.

“Their efforts to educate our communities about our history are indispensable.

“We must appreciate and value the contributions they make to preserving our cultural heritage.”
