Renowned local artist George Aldridge has recently concluded an illustrious career spanning over 35 years as a cartoonist for our region’s esteemed newspaper, The Bunyip.

Aldridge's career as a cartoonist has been marked by a diverse array of commissions, residencies and projects for numerous prestigious organisations, including the Country Arts Trust, the South Australian Museum, the ABC.

His distinctive cartoons have graced publications and projects for entities such as the Riverland Horticultural Council, National Parks and Wildlife, SA Health, the Law Council of Australia and the CSIRO.

Member for Light Tony Piccolo MP celebrated his extraordinary contributions not only to the world of cartooning, but also to our local community during a speech in Parliament House last Wednesday.

“George has made significant contributions to the community beyond his artistic achievements,” said Mr Piccolo.

“He played a pivotal role in the camel-handling project with PIRSA and the community in the APY lands, and he has hosted workshops for the education department in schools, including Bowden Brompton Community School with at risk children and Murray Bridge Primary School.

“Among his accomplishments was also creating and managing the Cookout Back camp oven cooking competition in Blinman in the early 2000s.”

Mr Piccolo also called upon his talents for many editions of his Light Office’s community newspaper, Enlightened, and highlighted why he was rightfully inducted into the Cartoonist Hall of Fame in Melbourne in 2023.

“The accolades reflect on his remarkable career and enduring impact on the world of cartooning,” said Mr Piccolo.

"George's work has not only provided us with humour and insight through his cartoons but has also strengthened communities through his various initiatives and projects.

“His dedication to both his craft and his community is truly commendable.”
