On 24 August Tony Piccolo delivered the following speech about the tragedy that is unfolding in Afghanistan in the Parliament of South Australia. The Hazara community would like the Commonwealth Government to take the following steps: grant immediate permanent protection to Afghans in Australia on temporary visas, particularly Hazara Afghans; increase particularly Afghani citizenship; and prioritise family reunions to make sure that we support our Afghani community.
There are an increasing number of people who approach my electorate offices to seek support for housing. The number of rough sleepers in my community has increased immensely. Even though there were people rough sleeping 10 years ago, you would hardly see them and there were not huge numbers. Today, they are much more visible and the number has certainly increased.
