Gawler and District College students have drawn inspiration at the school’s Artists Unleashed exhibition launch on Thursday (22nd August) in front of more than 50 people.

Coinciding with the South Australian Living Artists Festival (SALA), approximately 40 Year 7-12 Visual Arts students have showcased 49 different drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography and digital art.

Member for Light and former student, Tony Piccolo MP, was invited to speak during event and highlighted the value of chasing your passions in life.

“It’s inspiring to see the level of creativity and dedication on display at the exhibition – it looks like the works of professionals,” said Mr Piccolo.

“Art is not only a powerful way to express yourself, but also explore your imagination and bring beauty into the world.

“Works can also be important storytellers, particularly in times of crisis, to depict the emotions many people may be going through and emotive messages throughout our society.

“If you enjoy art and think you’re good at it - like any passion in life - keep going and develop those skills even further because whether it becomes a hobby or a career, it’s something that brings joy to you and even the people around you.”

The College’s Arts Coordinator, Julia Cricelli, was thrilled with the turnout, which also included Mayor Karen Redman, and is expecting the number of participating students to grow as the school year progresses.

“The event is an opportunity for the students to be free and express themselves through art,” said Ms Cricelli.

“The theme is open to all creativity and abilities, allowing any student to create anything that inspires them.

“Students have created a folio of artwork throughout the year, allowing them to explore and learn before leading into the final artworks we now see showcased.

“It’s a thrill for the students to be able to display their work to their parents, friends and the school community in this exhibition event – I’m very proud of everyone who submitted work.”
